Observing Nick Westfall’s Physical Education class is a testament to his teaching
philosophy: “A motivated student is an unstoppable student.” Nick’s remarkable ability to
create a calm and focused environment with 40 students sitting quietly in low lights,
shoes off, and centered on yoga mats, clearly illustrates his dedication and his
connection with his students. His genuine care for their well-being shines through in
every aspect of his class, inspiring students to become the best versions of themselves.

Nick’s curriculum emphasizes holistic wellness, blending physical, emotional, and
mental health, and instilling in his students the desire to carry these lessons forward as
lifelong advocates of their own wellness. His impact extends far beyond the gym,
motivating students to embrace health and wellness in every area of their lives.
Mr. Westfall’s objective as their teacher is to become progressively unnecessary. He
tells his students, “I’m here to help you become your own personal trainer, you own
yoga instructor, and your own physical educator. Believing in the “unlimited and largely
untapped potential of every student,” he challenges them to reach mastery, and gives
them many opportunities to do so.

Instruction in growth mindset and social wellness is also emphasized with both teacher
and student led discussions that end with important takeaways, such as the
psychological importance of exercise and the science of sleep habits. In these ways,
Nick goes beyond traditional physical education standards, as his students explore the
science of habit development and the neurobiology of motivation. Working with the PE
Leadership Cadre, Mr. Westfall coaches other physical education teachers on how to
innovate their curriculums to better meet the needs of every student, and still achieve all
state standards. While an undergrad in college, Nick fell in love with the biomechanics
of movement, and his remarkable teaching is a testament to that continuing passion!
